Biography

MAGGIE RAMSEY, mezzo-soprano, began her opera career in 2010 with Long Leaf Opera company in Chapel Hill, NC in Susan Kander’s One False Move. While earning her Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she performed in operas such as Die FledermausAmahl and the Night VisitorsHelp! Help! The GlobolinksHansel and GretelDon GiovanniThe Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, and The Gondoliers. After graduating cum laude from UNC-G, she earned her Master’s degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville; performances include the title role in the world premiere of Larry Delinger’s opera Medea with the University of Tennessee Opera Theatre and Third Lady in their production of Die Zauberflöte. She also performed Woman #2 and covered the role of Liz in the professional premiere of Griffin Candey’s Sweets by Kate with Marble City Opera. Other roles include Sandman in Knoxville Opera’s Hansel and Gretel, Mother in The Consul with University of Tennessee Opera Theatre, Giovanna in Asheville Lyric Opera and Brevard Music Center’s production of Rigoletto. Also at Brevard she performed the roles of Silver Dollar and Meg in The Ballad of Baby Doe.

In 2025 Maggie performed the roles of Katisha in The Mikado and Dorothée in The Anonymous Lover with Victorian Lyric Opera Company (VLOC) in Rockville, MD. Her 2024-2025 season also included appearing as the Duchess of Krakenthorpe in Bel Cantanti Opera’s (BCO) production of Donizetti’s La fille du regiment in Rockville, MD. Additionally, in 2024 she performed in two productions of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Ruddigore, with VLOC and with Young Victorian Theatre Company (YVTC) in Baltimore, MD. Maggie has spent seven seasons with Shakespeare Opera Theatre (SOT) in Northern Virginia; roles include Hansel, Sandman, and the Witch in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Emilia in Othello, Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Queen Gertrude in Hamlet, Prince Escalus Romeo and Juliet, and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Equally comfortable on the concert stage as well as in fully-staged operas, Maggie has sung for the past seven years with the Sopranessence women’s ensemble in Northern Virginia and Opera On Tap in Washington, D.C. The 2023-2024 season included six concerts in addition to a solo recital, I Love You To The Moon And Back: Songs Of Woman And Child. On the competition circuit, she was a semifinalist in the professional musical theatre division of the 2024 CS Music competition. Her 2025 season included a recital in preparation for the NATSAA competition.

Maggie has been teaching voice and piano since 2016 and continues to have a strong desire to help students find and understand their own voices so they can gain confidence and share a part of themselves with others. Her students have been accepted to prestigious singing opportunities such as the National Children’s Chorus in addition to winning principal roles in musicals.

On top of performing and teaching activities, the 2025-2026 season is Maggie’s third serving on the board of Sopranessence as Director of Communications and Outreach. She leads publicity and community engagement initiatives, attracting audiences via social media, poster placement, and word-of-mouth promotion.
